SIGIRIYA - THE LION ROCK FORTRESS

The History of Sigiriya

According to the ancient chronicle Chulavamsa, King Kashyapa I seized the throne and built his capital atop this massive granite outcrop to protect himself from rival claimants. Around the rock he created an elaborate city complex featuring:

• Moats and fortified ramparts

• Symmetrical water gardens

• Boulder gardens integrated into natural rock formations

• Royal bathing pools

• Palace structures atop the summit

After Kashyapa’s death in 495 CE, Sigiriya was converted into a Buddhist monastery that remained active until the 14th century. It later fell into ruin before being rediscovered by British archaeologists in the 19th century.

Today, Sigiriya stands as a testament to the ingenuity and artistic sophistication of ancient Sri Lanka.

Architectural & Artistic Highlights 

The Water Gardens

At the base of the rock lie geometrically designed gardens, complete with fountains that still function during the rainy season. These are among the oldest landscaped gardens in Asia.

The Boulder Gardens

Massive natural rock formations were incorporated into the defensive design, forming pathways, terraces and meeting spaces.

The Sigiriya Frescoes

Halfway up the rock face are vibrant 5th-century frescoes depicting celestial maidens known as “Apsaras.” Once covering much of the western face, only a portion remains — but their colour and detail remain extraordinary.

The Mirror Wall

Originally polished to a mirror-like sheen, this wall still bears ancient visitor inscriptions dating back over 1,000 years — some of the earliest examples of Sinhala poetry.

The Lion’s Paw Staircase

Near the summit, enormous stone lion paws frame the final ascent. The fortress gets its name “Sinhagiri” (Lion Rock) from this dramatic entrance.

The Summit Palace

At the top, explore the ruins of the royal palace complex, throne platform and bathing pools — all offering sweeping views across the surrounding plains, jungle and distant mountains.

Cultural Significance

Sigiriya represents one of the earliest examples of a “city in harmony with nature.” Its integration of architecture, landscape design and hydraulic engineering demonstrates the advanced knowledge of Sri Lanka’s 5th-century civilisation.

Ongoing excavations by Sri Lanka’s Central Cultural Fund continue to reveal insights into ancient urban life, monastic traditions and royal culture.
