Colombo, Sri Lanka

Rural surroundings to unplug and reset

Dotted with ancient temples, the rural region of Kotugoda sits almost midway between the fishing town of Negombo, home to Sri Lanka’s international airport, and the bustling capital Colombo. The former is a lively beach resort with a Dutch fort, fish market and mangrove-fringed lagoons; in the latter, Sri Lanka’s colonial past jostles up against shiny new high-rises, chic shops.

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Ancient cities and archaeological sites in the north of the Cultural Triangle

The Cultural Triangle – encompassing the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and everything in between – is a hinterland of history at Sri Lanka’s very heart. The grand vestiges of Anuradhapura, the seat of power in Sri Lanka for 1,300 years until it was abandoned in 993, have been reclaimed from the jungle: tour palaces, stupas and ancient reservoirs, as well as tumbledown temples still in use today. Back-to-nature activities in the wider region include bird watching, kayaking and cycling through local villages, offering an active counterpoint to the rich history of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your Experiences:

Set out on a private guided tour of the sacred city Anuradhapura, ending with a blessing near the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree, planted here in the 3rd century BCE from a cutting of the tree in India under which Buddha gained enlightenment. It’s considered the oldest living tree planted by humans in the world. Explore the surrounding region, too: the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dambulla, a hilltop Buddhist monastery home to staggering works of art across five cave temples; and the UNESCO-enshrined Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a royal citadel perched precariously atop a monolithic boulder, its 1,500-year-old frescoes still intact.

Kandy, Sri Lanka

The cultural epicenter of the Central Highlands

Set beside a peaceful lake and surrounded by lush hills, Kandy is one of Sri Lanka’s most culturally significant cities. Once the capital of the last independent Sri Lankan kingdom, it remains a vibrant centre of tradition, history and spirituality.

At the heart of the city is the Sacred Temple of the Tooth, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Buddhist temples in the world. Here, daily ceremonies honour a revered relic of the Buddha, accompanied by traditional drumming, incense and offerings of lotus flowers.

Your Experiences

Enjoy a guided visit to the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya with experienced botanist Bandara Palipana. The gardens feature more than 4,000 species of plants and trees, including towering palms, giant bamboo and an impressive orchid collection.

Afterwards, explore the highlights of Kandy on a city tour, discovering its historic temples, bustling markets and scenic viewpoints overlooking the lake and surrounding hills.

Tea Country, Sri Lanka

The heart of Sri Lanka’s hill and tea country

Sri Lanka is one of the world’s leading tea producers, and its scenic Central Highlands are famous for rolling green tea plantations established during the British colonial era in the 19th century. Today, the region remains one of the island’s most beautiful landscapes, where misty hills, cool mountain air and neatly terraced tea estates stretch as far as the eye can see.

Charming hill country towns such as Dickoya and Hatton sit among these lush plantations, offering visitors a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. Travellers can explore scenic walking trails, enjoy birdwatching, cycle through the tea country, or simply relax while taking in the spectacular views across the valleys and hills.

Your Experiences

Visit the historic Dunkeld Tea Estate and Factory for a guided tour that reveals the story of Sri Lanka’s world-famous Ceylon tea. Learn about the traditional process of growing, harvesting and producing tea, while hearing fascinating stories about the region’s plantation heritage.
