ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS PERADENIYA

Located just outside Kandy, the Royal Botanical Gardens Peradeniya are among the most beautiful and historically significant gardens in Asia. Spread across more than 60 hectares along the banks of the Mahaweli River, the gardens are a lush tropical sanctuary filled with towering palms, exotic orchids and vibrant flowering trees.

Originally established as a royal pleasure garden during the Kandyan Kingdom, Peradeniya was later transformed into a botanical garden by the British in the 19th century. Today it is one of Sri Lanka’s most visited natural attractions and an important centre for botanical research and conservation.

Visitors can wander through beautifully landscaped avenues shaded by towering Royal Palms, explore the famous Palm Avenue, and admire the spectacular orchid collection, which features hundreds of rare species. The gardens are also home to giant bamboo groves, spice trees and tropical flowering plants from across the world.

One of the highlights is the impressive giant Javan fig tree, whose enormous canopy spreads dramatically across the lawns. Another must-see is the avenue of Cannonball Trees, known for their unusual round fruit and fragrant blossoms.

The gardens are also a paradise for birdwatchers, with colourful species including parrots, kingfishers and Sri Lanka’s native jungle fowl frequently seen among the trees.

Many travellers visit the Royal Botanical Gardens as part of a cultural exploration of Kandy, often combined with a visit to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world.
